Since 1914, the American Red Cross has been involved in helping to make our Aquatic Environments safer by educating people in water safety. This movement began with Commodore Wilbert E. Longfellow. He saw that too many young people were losing their lives because of a lack of swimming abilities. He was said to have coined the phrase, “Every American a swimmer and every swimmer a lifesaver.”

Over 100 million people have received Red Cross Water Safety Training. Each year, over 200,000 lifeguards are trained by the American Red Cross. There are approximately 500,000 Red Cross trained lifeguards across the country, over 90% of the total lifeguard workforce! Each organization you see listed on our website is an Authorized Provider of American Red Cross Health & Safety Courses. They use Red Cross Instructors and the standardized Red Cross curriculum in their classes. If you at any time feel there is a problem or issue with your course or with the facility, please bring it to the attention of the Instructor or Facility Management immediately. If you don’t get a satisfactory response, please contact the Health & Safety Department of the Knoxville Area Chapter at 865-584-2999 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. ** A Review Course consists of select video segments, lecture, Instructor-led practice and both skill & written exams. It’s much like an abbreviated Full Course. A Challenge Course consists of taking your written test and performing your skills for an instructor. To success-fully pass a Challenge course, you must pass both your written & skills tests without assistance or coaching from the instructor. All reviewing and practice needs to be done BEFORE you attempt your Challenge course. You may only attempt a Challenge course once. If you are unsuccessful you must take a Full Course for recertification. CPR Rescue Masks are required for all skills practices.
