The American Red Cross:
- Is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to helping people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies
- Is not a government agency and does not receive government funds
- Relies on the support of the American people to carry out its lifesaving mission
History: Knoxville Area Chapter founded on February 6, 1917
Covered Area: Campbell, Grainger, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union Counties
What We Do:
- Service to the Armed Forces- provides communication and financial assistance to military personnel and their families
- Disaster Services- provides immediate help to disaster victims
- Volunteer Services- volunteers assist in all Red Cross programs
- Youth Services- gives local youth Red Cross training and volunteer opportunities
- Safety Services- CPR, First Aid, AED, and other lifesaving courses
- Nursing Services- provides training in health-related fields, such as the popular Nurse Assistant Training course
- International Services- protects life and health worldwide
In 2009, the Red Cross:
- Staffed 35 school health clinics that provided 67,568 services
- Trained 14,653 people in lifesaving safety courses
- Spent over 81 cents of every donated dollar on local programs and services
- Provided assistance for 250 families after house fires and other local disasters
- Relayed 708 emergency messages on behalf of military personnel and their families living in the Knoxville area
- Managed First Aid Stations at 147 local events
- Taught 305 participants in the Nurses Assistant Training program
